Director's Statement

Brocket 99 - Rockin' the Country is an expression of the many different ideas and attitudes that emerge when discussing the Brocket 99 tape. The film captures some of these diverse, conflicted, emotive, and at times unexpected attitudes that exist toward the controversial Brocket 99 tape. Through this dialogue, the film elucidates the complexity and reality of racist attitudes that still remain in Canada. The film aims to go through what has become "the unspeakable" in order to engage in a "tough" but achievable and necessary dialogue. Through the diversity of people and voices represented, the film hopes to expose the futility of both racist actions and attitudes, which affect us all, in order that we all may move beyond the manufactured limitations of racial, cultural, and social stereotypes.
